13 Simple Steps to Make Egg Roll (The complete beginners guide)

Egg roll is a popular appetizer in some of the African countries and totally different from the Chinese egg roll. The egg roll is deep fried or baked and every easy to make. The success in achieving a great egg roll is in preparing the dough well. The dough should soft, not be too watery and not too hard.


4 cups of all purpose flour

1 teaspoon of baking powder

1 cup of lukewarm water

Pinch of salt

2/3 cup of milk

17 eggs

1 teaspoon of nutmeg

4 tablespoon of margarine

½ cup of white sugar or more

½ teaspoon of white pepper

Vegetable oil for frying

1 raw egg for the mixture


1. First boil the eggs until is cooked.

2. In a clean dry bowl, sift your dry ingredient( flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, nutmeg)

3. Add margarine to your ingredients, using your fingers rub the margarine into the flour until is crumb

4. Add the beaten egg in the mixture

5. Add water once at a time. Mix the water in the flour until the dough is softly formed. You can sprinkle little flour at a time if the dough sticks to your palm, to get it soft and not sticky.

6. Divide the dough into 17 equal pieces

7. Roll the dough in a clean surface.

8. Put the boiled egg in the dough and roll in your palm to close the opening of the dough and form an egg shape. Repeat same process with rest of the dough and egg respectively.

9. Add oil in a frying pan and heat it till it’s hot.

10. Gently add the dough balls in the hot oil and fry till are well fried on the both sides.

11. Repeat the frying process with the remaining dough until is golden grown.

12. Fry under a medium heat.

13. Remove the egg rolls from the hot oil to drain the excess oil.


  •  For those who prefer baking to frying, you can still bake egg roll. Preheat the oven and bake for 20 minutes until is golden brown.
  • Use enough oil for the frying to get best result.
  • Frying on a high heat will stop the egg roll from cooking inside, so you should cook on a medium heat. If you are afraid so that the egg roll should not get soggy, it won’t as long as the oil is still hot and not cold.
  • Only wrap the egg when you’re ready to fry, if not the dough will continue to rise. This will make the dough to lose its comfort around the egg by the time you fry.


Egg roll is a very filling snack and entirely healthy for both young and old, it could be served either cold or hot. Those who love tea can have egg roll for breakfast. It can also be served with a cold drink.
