Salad is always very easy to make, it’s tasty and very filling. It goes with any type of food; it’s versatile to be served in small portions as appetiser or hearty dish. The beautiful thing with salad is that you can modify the ingredients to cater your personal taste.

Have it in mind that vegetables do not need leafy to be worthy of a role in the salad bowl. This pleasant salad contains both raw and cooked vegetables, eggs, pasta and lots more. Its sure that salad makes a hearty meal itself with all these ingredients, it can be served as a side dish with anything eatable, like; fried rice, jollof rice, fried chicken and more.

Kitchen tools you’ll need

  • Mixing bowl
  • Foil paper
  • Chopping board
  • Egg slicer
  • Kitchen knife


  • 2 carrots
  • 3 cups of cabbage shredded
  • 2 cups of lettuce shredded
  • 2 ripe and hard tomatoes
  • Boiled potatoes or 1 cup of pasta
  • 1 medium size cucumber
  • 8 ounces baked beans
  • 8 ounce sweet corn
  • 8 tablespoon of Heinz salad cream


1. Thoroughly wash all your vegetables in cold running water.

2. Boil the eggs and pasta with little salt till al-dente.

3. You can grate or cut your carrots into little cubes.

4. Thinly slice your lettuce and cabbage, cut tomatoes into little cubes.

5. Dice the boiled pasta and slice the egg using an egg slicer.

6. Peel and remove the cucumber seed and cube it. But you can leave it like that if you don’t want peeled one.

7. Empty your sweet corn and bake beans in a bowl.

8. Apart from your eggs and cream, add all your other ingredients in a bowl, you then cover it with a plastic wrap and place it in the fridge for about an hour. Remember fridge and not freezer.

Reason why you don’t want to add the salad cream until you are ready to serve is because you won’t want it to be bad and by adding.


  • Dressing can make the lettuce limp, it is of a great important to mix your salad at the very last possible moment when you are about to serve it in other to keep the leaves crisp.
  • Getting a balance when dressing is of utmost important, cause too much dressing will make the salad overwhelm also too little dressing will make the salad so tasteless.
  • Make sure that all your ingredients are totally free from excess water, so as the excess water will not prevent the dressing from adhering to your salad.
  • It is best to make use of ripe but hard tomatoes, soft and juicy tomatoes will get your salad to become wet.

Incorporating Protein

Complete your salad with grilled chicken or steak.

For a versatile topping, you can use leftover to make a quick meal if you have them, or you prepare one right away before you eat. Steak and chicken add a lot of protein and they are fairly inexpensive options, depending on what kind of steak you purchase. You can also shredded or bake chicken, depending on what you have available.

Add tuna for more additional protein

Canned or packet tuna is already cooked, making it an easy way to add more protein to your meal. If the tuna comes in oil, make sure to drain it before putting it on your salad. You can even prepare a quick tuna salad.

Use tofu for a protein

Try lightly frying some tofu to make it crispy or you cloud marinate it to your favourite sauce to give it more extra flavour.

There are many things that make this salad unique which the dressing is one of the top things and are not sold anywhere. So below is the recipe that is close to the original Heinz dressing:

Ingredients for Heinz Dressing

  • 2 tablespoon of white vinegar
  • 6 tablespoon of mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoon of icing sugar
  • 2 teaspoon of mustard (optional)


The central ingredients are lettuce and cabbage but it’s surrounded by tomato, pasta, eggs, cucumber, baked beans and sweet corn. All these ingredients make this salad economical enough to entertain a crowd and like with most salad. For instance, potato can be used as a substitute for the pasta that is quite flexible.
