How to Make Waffles at Home Perfectly

Waffles are the ideal food. Not just for breakfast but all round. They are easy to make with ingredients you always can reach in your own kitchen; any mix-ins go well in them and everything is great topped on them. Waffles are bread-like in flavour; they are crispy on the outside and super soft on the inside. They are good for breakfast, brunch or dessert.

Homemade Waffles

Waffles fall into the “quick bread” category of baking, which means they’re leavened with baking powder, and the method is super easy and fast. With any kind of quick bread, you start by blending the dry ingredients like flour, sugar, baking powder and salt, just whisk them together in a big bowl. Then whisk together the buttermilk, melted butter, eggs and vanilla.

Cook’s notes for Perfect Waffles

  • Be sure to preheat your waffle iron well, setting it on medium heat.
  • Try not to open the waffle for the first minute through the cooking time, at this point the waffle is still forming and opening it up at this time will ruin the shape of the waffles.
  • Cook your waffles until golden and make sure the inside is cooked and the outside is crispy.
  • Though your waffle maker has a light that comes out when your waffles are done, always watch for escaping steam from the sides, when the escaping steam is minimal, your waffles are about done.
  • Waffles are best served when warm or hot.
  • If you have leftover waffles, simply put the waffles in an airtight plastic bag and place it in the freezer, it will last up to a month in the freezer.
  • When you are ready to use the frozen waffles, just microwave them or place them in the oven at 350 degrees for about 5 to 10 minutes or till it is heated through.
  • You can add blueberries to these waffles if you want to. Simply scatter some fresh or frozen berries over the batter after spooning your batter into your waffle maker.
  • You can use milk or buttermilk for these. Use whatever milk you have in the fridge. Though I’ve not tried it myself, I guess soy or almond milk should work just fine here as well.

  • 3 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoon of sugar
  • 1 ½ tablespoon of baking powder
  • ¾ teaspoon of salt
  • ¾ cup of melted unsalted butter
  • 3 large eggs
  • 3 cups of buttermilk
  • 1 ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract (optional)

  • Preheat your waffle maker
  • Place the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl and whisk to combine, set it aside.
  • Place the buttermilk, melted butter, eggs and vanilla in a separate bowl and lightly whisk them together.
  • Pour the liquid ingredients into the dry mixture, and fold together until mostly blended but still a little lumpy.
  • Grease your preheated waffle maker with cooking spray or oil, place about 1 cup of waffle batter into the hot waffle maker and cook until golden brown or for about 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Serve them warm or hot. Enjoy!

Make a big batch of these homemade waffles, and keep them in your freezer. They freeze beautifully and make busy mornings so much easier. As the waffles come out of the waffle maker, cool them on a wire rack. Freeze them in a single until hard, then slip them into a plastic bag and stash them for several weeks in the freezer. When you are ready to serve, just reheat them gently in the toaster.
